The roster spot left vacant by the released Marcus Mason was filled today -like everyone suspected- by a defensive back. The Jets signed former Eagles backup safety JR Reed, and I know what your thinking but his name is JR Reid, not the same guy.
Seriously though how much is this guy going to help? I have not heard if Marcus Mason cleared waivers or not, but I am a little unnerved by the fact that we potentially gave up on a guy that could have been apart of our roster for a while just to sign a stop gap guy that could be gone next week.
This just shows how pathetic our secondary has been lately. Speaking of that did anyone hear Kerry Rhodes on Boomer and Carton yesterday? If not, it’s probably better you don’t. I like Kerry as a player a lot, but the guy sounded clueless during the interview when he was asked why the DB’s have been struggling so much. Kind of scary if you ask me. Isn’t he the leader of that group?

Finally, the winter meeting are here! Here are some of the stories floating around out there about the Mets and players who could be Mets come Spring Training ‘09.
- As you all probably know Omar dined with K-Rod last night in Vegas. David Lennon of Newsday reported that Omar just smiled when asked if he made an offer to the closer, but did mention that he still plans on meeting with fellow closers Trevor Hoffman and Brian Fuentes while in Vegas this week. My guess is Minaya made a preliminary offer to K-Rod as the righty seems to be #1 on the organization’s wish list. Along with meeting with Hoffman and Fuentes hopefully Omar approaches the Mariners in regards to trading for JJ Putz. As I have stated numerous times my feeling is that Putz as the closer and Huston Street as the 8th inning guy would be the best scenario for the Mets all things considered. Saving a little money with bullpen signings could free up enough money for the Mets to sign or trade for a #2 type starter as well as a corner oufield bat. Both of which, along with closer, are the biggest glaring needs for the team.

With so many rumors floating around regarding the Mets and other clubs I thought I would chime in on some things I have heard and read the past couple of days.
- Was anyone else shocked that the Mets balked at the chance of getting Chad Bradford back? I would really like to hear from Omar as to why he did not pull the trigger on this deal. From what Joel Sherman wrote in the Post today it seemed as though the Mets did not have to give up much of anything for him, it was just a case of the Rays’ payroll situation not allowing them to keep a setup man that makes $3.5 million per. Is Omar getting cheap on us now? Nothing about Bradford’s numbers could have turned him off. See for yourself, he was really good this season. Not great by any means but way better than what the Mets had. The only logical reason is the money. Wow, I expect the fan backlash to this non-move to be fierce.

Pic is from Mets Blog, thanks Matt.
- The Mets left field situation was discussed and scrutinized in several outlets today. Why today? No clue. The cases for and against Manny were debated on the Bergen Record’s website, Eric Simon over at Amazin’ Avenue threw out the idea of Adam Dunn in left, and David Lennon of Newsday tossed around names such as Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu, but thinks if the Mets had their way Raul Ibanez would be their Opening Day leftfielder. My opinion on these LF possibilities is as follows: Continue Reading »

- Was the Mets investment in Pedro worth it? That is the question Mike Silva tackled today over at NY Baseball Digest. While I know Pedro’s performance on the field did not validate his 4-year $53 million contract at the time the Mets needed to prove to their fans and more importantly other big names that they could bring a talent the caliber of Pedro to Flushing. The overall influence his signing had on the organization made maybe wasting a little bit of money well worth it in my mind. Continue Reading »

- The Mets will most likely offer Oliver Perez salary arbritration today a deal he will definitely refuse as Roger Rubin of the Daily News points out. The best case for the Mets , other than Perez signing of course which is pipe dream at this point, is for the club to be compensated with a 1st and 2nd round draft pick for losing a Type-A which Oliver figures to be.
