As Suspected Jets Sign DB to Replace Marcus Mason

Published by Mike under Jets, Mets Musings

The roster spot left vacant by the released Marcus Mason was filled today -like everyone suspected- by a defensive back.  The Jets signed former Eagles backup safety JR Reed, and I know what your thinking but his name is JR Reid, not the same guy.

Seriously though how much is this guy going to help?  I have not heard if Marcus Mason cleared waivers or not, but I am a little unnerved by the fact that we potentially gave up on a guy that could have been apart of our roster for a while just to sign a stop gap guy that could be gone next week.

This just shows how pathetic our secondary has been lately.  Speaking of that did anyone hear Kerry Rhodes on Boomer and Carton yesterday?  If not, it’s probably better you don’t.  I like Kerry as a player a lot, but the guy sounded clueless during the interview when he was asked why the DB’s have been struggling so much.  Kind of scary if you ask me.  Isn’t he the leader of that group?

Reggie Hodges Will Be Punting for His Job on Sunday

Published by Mike under Jets

The Jets worked out three players today, one of which was former Patriots and Cardinals punter Scott Player.  Mangini said today in his press conference today that Reggie Hodges would be the punter on Sunday vs the Bills, but insinuated that he must be better in order to keep his job.

I can’t help but think Mangini is bitter over the fact that Hodges punted the ball in the end zone last week after a drive where the Jets stalled on the 49ers 38 yard line and the head coach decided against going for it on 4th and 2.  A decision he has been criticized for in some circles.

In my opinion, Hodges has been just OK.  If the Jets want to sign Player that is fine with me, the hope of getting some continuity in the kicking game is long gone by now.  Heck, patch it up every week if you need to.  At this point I don’t think Jets fans would even be surprised if Sean Landeta made a comeback.

Jets-Speak: What’s Done is Done

Published by Mike under Jets, Jets-Speak

On Wednesday each week I will give my reactions to some quotes made by Jets players, coaches, and front office personnel about the previous week’s game.

Eric Mangini: “If there hadn’t been a sense of urgency, there certainly will be now.”

To me it sounds like Mangini and the coaches warned the players not to get to high on themselves after the wins @ New England and Tennessee and those warnings fell on deaf ears.  Mangini is hoping against hope that the veterans that have mailed it in the past couple of weeks can turn the switch back on the last three games of the regular season.

It Looks Like Brad Smith Should Be Ready to Play This Week

Published by Mike under Jets, Videos

Brad Smith left the game seeing stars last week after he was the recipient of this vicious hit by 49ers LB Patrick Willis…

Man, that was some hit.  Which is why I was a bit surprised to read on NJ.com today that not only was Brad able to walk in a straight line, but he was well enough to promote a youth health program called What Moves U.  Good guy that Brad Smith.  It is actually refreshing to see a positive story about the Jets written this week even if it has absolutely nothing to do with their play on the field.

Jets Release Marcus Mason, Will They Sign a DB to Fill His Roster Spot?

Published by Mike under Jets, Jets Roster Moves

I just read on Erik Boland’s blog that the Jets have released running back Marcus Mason.  Presumably the Jets will fill the roster spot vacated by Mason with a defensive back.  Boland has a suggestion as to who they should consider bringing in,

Veteran cornerback Brian Kelly was released today by the Lions. Just saying he’s one of the guys out there…

If the Jets are looking to bring another DB in - which I haven’t heard - given the time of year Brian Kelly will probably be one of their best options.

If you remember the Jets looked to acquire Brian Kelly back in the Herm days because of his experience in the Tampa 2.

A Unique look at the AFC Playoff Picture

Published by Mike under AFC Playoff Chart, Jets

This table is from the website playoffstatus.com as you can see it labels the percentage chance each team in the AFC has at a particular playoff seed as well as the chance they do not qualify for the playoffs at all. From reading this chart it looks as though the Jets have to win the division and cannot count on a Wild Card spot being there should they fall short of the division crown.  Check out the % chance of the Jets NOT making the playoffs at all.  Scary, huh?  I will post this chart weekly until the end of the season.
