The roster spot left vacant by the released Marcus Mason was filled today -like everyone suspected- by a defensive back. The Jets signed former Eagles backup safety JR Reed, and I know what your thinking but his name is JR Reid, not the same guy.

Seriously though how much is this guy going to help? I have not heard if Marcus Mason cleared waivers or not, but I am a little unnerved by the fact that we potentially gave up on a guy that could have been apart of our roster for a while just to sign a stop gap guy that could be gone next week.

This just shows how pathetic our secondary has been lately. Speaking of that did anyone hear Kerry Rhodes on Boomer and Carton yesterday? If not, it’s probably better you don’t. I like Kerry as a player a lot, but the guy sounded clueless during the interview when he was asked why the DB’s have been struggling so much. Kind of scary if you ask me. Isn’t he the leader of that group?

The Jets worked out three players today, one of which was former Patriots and Cardinals punter Scott Player. Mangini said today in his press conference today that Reggie Hodges would be the punter on Sunday vs the Bills, but insinuated that he must be better in order to keep his job.

I can’t help but think Mangini is bitter over the fact that Hodges punted the ball in the end zone last week after a drive where the Jets stalled on the 49ers 38 yard line and the head coach decided against going for it on 4th and 2. A decision he has been criticized for in some circles.

In my opinion, Hodges has been just OK. If the Jets want to sign Player that is fine with me, the hope of getting some continuity in the kicking game is long gone by now. Heck, patch it up every week if you need to. At this point I don’t think Jets fans would even be surprised if Sean Landeta made a comeback.

Ruben Amaro Jr. has been the GM of the Phillies for all of what, 2 months? Already he is doing his part to ensure Mets fans hate him. Check out his reaction to the signing of K-Rod.

”I don’t think it affects us much,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “They’ve had Billy Wagner, and we still beat them the last 2 years in our division.”

What he said is 100% true, but was mentioning Wagner and reminding everyone they have won the division the last 2 years really neccessary? Mark it down, the first salvo in the ‘09 chapter of this rivalry was fired by Amaro. Don’t expect a shot back from Omar Minaya Phillies fans, he is to classy for that. Plus his focus is where it should be, on bettering the Mets for next season. Pat Gillick did a good job building the current Phillies roster, if I was Amaro I would concentrate on what I have to do to keep the Phils playing at a championship level as opposed to making snide comments about my team’s rival. Just sayin’.

On Wednesday each week I will give my reactions to some quotes made by Jets players, coaches, and front office personnel about the previous week’s game.

Eric Mangini: “If there hadn’t been a sense of urgency, there certainly will be now.”

To me it sounds like Mangini and the coaches warned the players not to get to high on themselves after the wins @ New England and Tennessee and those warnings fell on deaf ears. Mangini is hoping against hope that the veterans that have mailed it in the past couple of weeks can turn the switch back on the last three games of the regular season.

David Bowens: “For me, my preparation is week-in and week-out and that is how I’ve always been. You can say it was a distraction because of what happened the last two weeks, but if it was, it can’t be. We can’t allow things like that, it’s the ‘old lobster trap.’

This was Bowens reacting to the possbility that some of his teammates were getting distracted with the Jets-Giants Super Bowl talk. Considering the Jets have a strong verteran presence in the locker room I really hope this is not the reason for their inconsistent play the past couple of weeks. Hopefully the Jets’ poor play vs Denver and San Fran had more to do with poor game planning and the opponents playing above their heads rather than the players’ over-confident attitudes. The first problem can be remedied the latter not so much.

Damien Woody: “Regardless of the fact that we’ve lost two in a row, we still have everything in front of us. For three weeks, we just have to buckle down and, man, just go for it.”

This might is the best perspective from a Jets player I have heard all week. What’s done is done. Just move on, learn from the mistakes, and go out and battle these last three weeks. Hopefully the other Jets follow Woody’s lead, especially the young players who have not been through the late season media storm like the veteran offensive lineman has. Forget about big picture stuff because it all eventually becomes irrelevant if you don’t take care of your business on the field. I like Woody’s attitude. A lot.
