Postgame Knee-Jerk Reactions: 49ers 24 Jets 14

Published by Mike at 11:42 pm under Jets

As I watch the Jets games each week I scribble down notes.  On a day like today those notes are written sloppy and in some spots the papers are torn.  Here is the translation of  some of the notes I took today while watching the debacle at Candlestick.

  • The Jets pass rush again was nonexistent.  Shaun Hill - who consistently took 13 step drops the entire game - had all day to throw and subsequently looked like Dan Marino.  If the Jets rushed more than 4 players a handful of times today I would be shocked.  The defensive coaches came into this game with a plan that was proved to be flawed on many levels in the first half, why didn’t they make any in-game adjustments to rectify the problems they were having putting pressure on Hill?  After Gore went down they should have known the Niners would resort to airing the ball out.  I am going to have nightmares of Issac Bruce, Bryant Johnson and the tight ends of the 49ers running those extremely long to develop crossing patterns while the three Jets pass rushers are being double teamed.

  • Raise your hand if you want to see the Jets run more plays that involve any kind of Brad Smith option pitch.  Yup, didn’t think I would see any hands in the air.  Seriously this is two weeks in a row now.  We all understand he was a QB in college and could potentially be a dynamic player for this offense, but maybe, just maybe, he is not as ready for the big role they are expecting him to play on offense and special teams.  My advice: Have Smith concentrate on being a number 3 or 4 type of receiver, and that’s it.  I believe if given the chance to develop as a pass catcher he could actually be pretty decent.  Lastly, I hope he is feeling OK after that hit he took from Willis in the 4th qtr., that was a nasty blow.

  • 49ers fans have to be optimistic as to what their team’s future holds with Mike Singletary at the helm.  The Niners D played great today.  Minus their best DB, Nate Clements, they totally bottled up the Jets’ big three receivers in Cotchery, Coles, and Keller.  Combined the trio had 4 catches for 29 yards.  Based on what I saw today San Fran has a solid base to build around, that core includes: Singletary, Frank Gore, Patrick Willis, Nate Clements (who again didn’t play, but we all know what he can do from his Buffalo days), and offensive tackle Joe Staley.

  • One thing I know for sure is after hearing what he had to say to Bay Area reporters this week and watching his performance today is that Laveranues Coles will not be a Jet next season.  To be honest, for what he is going to want to be paid the Jets can get someone who is equal to him in ability and that guy will probably have a better attitude than he does as well.  As I said earlier today, I have always liked Coles, but he has kind of worn out his welcome. It’s time for him to go once the season is over.

  • How much of a buzzkill was the holding call on that Leon Washington kickoff return?  Granted, that is by no means the reason they lost the game, but still he is so damn exciting when he gets the ball isn’t he?  I went from jumping up and down cheering when I thought he had a TD to throwing my pen against the wall when I saw the flag icon on my TV screen.
